Assessing Online Engaged Learning

If the assessments are opportunities for students to learn, then we [instructors] are using every opportunity to refine their knowledge as well as evaluate and refine our course.

Assessment in any type of course, online or classroom-based, is either written or performance-based. Written assessment is best to use when evaluating declarative knowledge (that which can be stated) and procedural knowledge (knowing how to do something). Problem-solving ability is best assessed with performance-based methods. Learners can work together to process and develop any of these types of knowledge.
