Introduction

A camera is an amazing piece of engineering because whether it costs $5,000 or $100, it is still a box with a hole that lets in light. Cameras are produced for a variety of purposes, yet they all do the same basic thing: Record an image of the scene in front of them.

The aim of this chapter is to help you learn enough about photography so you can make the kind of photographs you envision. This chapter reviews the technical aspects of cameras, introduces you to image composition and advises you on how to use this knowledge to tell stories visually.
