The director has now carefully analyzed the script and, based on this analysis, formulated character roles. He or she has also begun the delicate process of guiding the cast toward credible performances. These elements he or she has executed thus far could be thought of as one side of a director’s aesthetic balance.

Now comes the other side of that balance—the task of making sure the actor’s performances are recorded in a way that will not only maintain but also heighten their impact and credibility. The first ele- ment on this second side of the balance is audiovisual aesthetics.
