Encyclopedias are anthologies of reference material. The name is Greek in origin and means “general education.” Encyclopedias have existed for at least two millennia, but they have undergone an unprecedented and radical transformation in the last 20 years.

In 1993, Microsoft launched Encarta on CD-ROM with entries supplemented with video and audio. It changed forever the way encyclopedic information was conveyed.
