In 1798 Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) undertook a trip from the Mediterranean to the East to block the routes of the British Empire. The French army went to Egypt and was composed not only of people in arms but also of professors and researchers recruited to gather information on Egyptian culture. In mid-1799 the campaign in Egypt continued its course, although without Napoleon since he had already begun his return to France. On July 15, 1799, the French arrived at a town near the port city of Rashid, known to the French as Rosetta.
