Chapter 8Your Plan for Creating Inclusion through CompassionWhat Works
To achieve true inclusivity, company leaders need to get real about what they are willing to do and the time frame they'll do it in. Change can't wait until tomorrow. There is too much at stake for companies to put off inclusion and fair promotion of people of color until you find the “perfect” diversity strategy. The despair and disappointment felt by people of color has been centuries in the making. The time to act is now. It's important to remember that inclusivity is a core component of compassion. Recruitment and retention are tools by which inclusivity is achieved.
There is no secret formula to inclusivity. Achieving it requires commitment. Building on the shifts in language, values, and behavior that we discussed in previous chapters, we should next leverage those changes to create intentional recruitment, genuine inclusion, and the fair promotion of underrepresented employees as part of the new corporate landscape.
This chapter offers guidance on the steps that leaders can take to further these goals, such as these:
- Take a fresh approach to the hiring processes
- Strengthen your search for talent
- Explore valuable recruitment channels
- Achieve stronger supply chain diversity
- Make the commitment an executive team effort
- Avoid the diversity revolving door: retaining diverse talent
- Bottom-line benefits of inclusivity
