Chapter 10The FutureCompassionate Corporate Culture and Sustainable Business
Moving toward compassionate corporate cultures means shifting our mindsets. For those who believe that the role of business goes beyond profit margins and includes the creation of inclusive workplaces that reflect a more compassionate society, we must commit to introspection, ongoing education, and openness. We must value the exploration of why our organizations exist and challenge Milton Friedman's rationale, which was discussed in Chapter 1, that business exists only to make money. We must operate and make decisions in a way that is better for the people inside the corporation, as well as the people outside.
We close the book with an exploration of how leaders can strengthen communities where they do business, making positive social impacts on environmental, social, and governance issues. We'll also look at some plans for partnering with employees, customers, and external organizations to identify and implement social change, the alignment of green business and compassionate business, and redefining the purpose of business.
