Chapter Fourteen

New Approach to Cathodic Protection Design for New Pipelines

Abstract

Viewing the subject of cathodic protection (CP) from a new perspective, this chapter explores whether the slope parameter of the CP design for offshore structures can be applied to pipelines. This approach considers metallic path resistance and seawater-to-pipe resistance to be negligible. It also assumes that the current enters the pipeline at coating holidays. The coating breakdown factor is also constant, and all these assumptions allow the evaluator to hold the CP circuit resistance in congruence with the individual anode resistance. The chapter includes sample calculations to illustrate the concept.
