Bureau of Engraving and Printing
Introduction
Everybody is familiar with the product of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP)—that is, the currency of the United States. Most, however, are not familiar with the operating environment of the Bureau and how it differs from most government organizations in two significant ways.
The first difference is that, although BEP is a branch of the United States Treasury Department, it receives no appropriated funds. BEP exemplifies a type of governmental organization known as an enterprise or revolving fund. Revenues are generated by sales of products and services, and the revenues must cover both operating costs and capital requirements.
