This book evolved from my doctoral and post-doctoral research activities between 2005 and 2009¹ and dissatisfaction with the material that had been published on Venezuela's Bolivarian Revolution and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP). Indeed, most of the existing work published in English and Castilian lacks either theoretical or empirical grounding, or both. Encounters with young researchers ‘in the field’, at conferences and through academic exchange programmes made me realize that this perception was shared across disciplines, and enthusiasm for this collaborative effort quickly developed among its participants.
