Making and Sharing Scientific Equipment

Poor Scientists, Rich Open-Source Science

As you might suspect, scientists are also interested in the power of open-source technologies to save them money. Very few scientists have all the equipment they want to do their experiments. You may even want to do an experiment yourself and do not have the money for commercial scientific tools. Even the wealthiest labs at the largest companies and most prestigious universities don’t have all the best scientific tools. This is largely due to the inflated prices of proprietary scientific equipment for experimental research (Pearce, 2014). When scientists don’t have the tools they want, it slows the rate of scientific discovery.
