Since I started boxing several years ago, I’ve thought I should
make a story about it. My comics are usually pretty sugary
and nonviolent, so I thought it might be a fun change to draw
some characters punching each other. When the fight scene
was over, though, I felt a little sorry for the characters, so I fixed
everything up between them in the end. Also, I used a lot of
photo references for the boxing scene, which was fun—mostly
old action photos of Muhammad Ali from Corbis—which is
my favorite source for reference photos because you can find
photos of absolutely anything. Also, there was a silkscreened
poster that went along with the comic, “advertising” the fight
between the penguin and the monkey in the style of old boxing
posters. I used the Hatch Show Print book for reference on
that, as well as some old letterpress boxing posters that I
found online.
