Chapter 3

Planning

“Plan before do.”

—Senior project manager

One common mistake among beginning video producers is to shoot before planning exactly what they want to do. The result is, predictably, poor video, bordering on useless. More to the point, the planning needs to be concerned with what the viewer is intended to take away from the production. Beginning with the end in mind will vastly improve the production.

The planning stage also is an opportunity to bring the team together to create a shared understanding of what the video is to accomplish and how it will achieve it. Creating good video is not a solo effort. The team will achieve much more than any one of us can alone.
