Getting on with other people is sometimes the easiest and sometimes the hardest of things to do. But easy or difficult, relationships are vitally important. Humans are social creatures who love to live in tribes, whether in the forest or desert, or in towns and cities. All cultures feature hierarchies of power and social formalities, from the smallest tribal unit – the family – all the way up to huge organisations such as the European Community and the United Nations.

Wherever you go and whatever you do, you interact with people: those you have power over and those who have power over you; those you teach and those who teach you; those who guide you spiritually and those who entertain you; those you work with and those who work for you; and so on. And you build relationships with all the people you come into contact with most frequently, or with whom you choose to spend your time.
