Algorithms and individuals
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence or really digital algorithms that run our lives are common digital recipes. It is in our nature to recapitulate any successful sequence, but AI often replaces humans in a manner that lacks transparency, design, and accountability, and without empathy. A particular program called Compas, defended with a lot of statistical bravado, is used to make decisions about whether prisoners will be paroled. I find that the predictive power of Compas is slight, less than credit scores.
