This chapter discusses block ciphers, such as the Data Encryption System (DES) and the Advanced Encryption System (AES) . Different aspects, such as substitution/permutation, are discussed as design techniques used with block ciphers. This approach is based on FIPS 46-3 for DES and FIPS-197 for AES.

An important aspect to be noted is the fact that DES was withdrawn on May 19, 2005. A historical list of the reasons can be consulted in [1]. The DES algorithm is not used anymore ...
