Patterns
A motif is a dominant element or decorative pattern in art.
Just as in life, in art we may be attracted to certain motifs or
patterns. Noticing these patterns and being aware of how
they affect us can be helpful for our personal growth.
Some patterns can be detrimental to the spirit, while
others move us forward creatively and help us live healthy
lives. Certainly, there is comfort in routine. For instance,
every morning after I get out of bed, I like to make a cup of
green tea with honey—hot or iced, depending on the season.

I then take my dog out for a short walk and sit
on a park bench with my cup of tea. Slowly I begin
to wake up as I watch my dog play. The surrounding
sounds of morning traffic combined with birdsong
gradually heighten my senses and get me going. If I
have some extra time, I will practice yoga and catch
up on phone calls at home.
I know many other people who follow specific
routines when they awake or before they fall sleep.
One of my friends always makes a cup of home-
made chai with dried herbs as he wakes, while an-
other writes in her journal and reads passages from
devotional books to start every morning anew.
Patterns are not solely action-based. Some are
mental and emotional and can lead to repetitive ac-
tions, or hinder us from making changes. Recogniz-
ing and changing negative thought patterns can be
a stimulant for new ideas and experiences in life.
