Case 1
A 29-year-old African-American male, an inmate of a maximum security prison, was brought to a hospital emergency room after attempting to hang himself. The patient had been convicted on charges of the rape and murder of an 18-year-old Caucasian girl. He was serving a life sentence without parole. Subjected to considerable abuse and harassment for more than a year at the hands of both inmates and guards, most of whom were Caucasian like his victim, he had become increasingly depressed.
