I can’t remember exactly when we lost control. Maybe it was when I tapped the bow thruster, that strange propeller in the side of the hull that moves the nose of the boat sideways instead of forward. Maybe it was when I tried to correct the stern as it drifted further from the wall. Maybe it was the instant we bought this boat, or when Maggie plopped the book From What Is to What If into her Amazon cart. All I knew is that the boat was spinning, and I didn’t want it to be.

Currently wasn’t new, but she was new to us; she had plenty of scratches and dents, but few we had added ourselves. All boats have such marks, each capturing some tiny story or platitude. We were in the middle of such a story as we spun ...
