The confusion of opening and closing weather windows started to clear like a slowly lifting fog. It became clear that the traditional crossing from Carrabelle to Tarpon Springs would be off the table. We needed to be in Apalachicola to finish my class. Fortuitously, we met George, the marina’s owner and dockmaster, for a brief conversation.

George was a huge fan of crossing from Apalachicola to Clearwater because it saved a ten-mile double-back from Carrabelle to Dog Island. By leaving from our current mooring, we’d save a night at the cost of about twenty miles. In the scheme of things, that extra distance was nothing.
