Chapter 27The Treadmill at the Cardio Lab

The loop is a funny thing. The way we react to certain kinds of stimuli depends on our state of mind. The sound of waves breaking played gently through my Bose sleepbuds, drowning out the sounds of…um…Emmy snoring on the floor and arrhythmic waves slapping on the hull right under our chines, until I drift off to sleep. Those same sounds without earbuds, a few moments before the dawn of a treacherous crossing, will ratchet up my heart rate. Wave sounds after our crossing from a restaurant overlooking a bay provoke feelings of peace and accomplishment. It’s all context.
