Rivers can be dangerous places. I mentioned the 2021 sailboat that missed its turnoff entering the Chain of Rocks diversion, but other incidents happened too. In August 2022, a month before we were there, a high-performance cruising boat struck a barge near Decatur at night. Three people were killed. Wing dams, too, have their own kinds of risks at all different water levels. At high levels, boats can pass over wing dams and strike them with their keel or prop. At lower levels, boats can get caught in water formations, especially when anchoring beneath dams as the water levels change.
