The late Barry Goldwater was a political icon; he was the Republican nominee for president in 1964 and represented Arizona in the U.S. Senate for 30 years. In 1979, during the Iran hostage crisis, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, of which Goldwater was a member, met to discuss the possibility of launching a military mission to free the American hostages.
