The file cabinet is a good model for information engineering. Would you ask a cabinetmaker to tell you what information is important to you and how you should file it? Of course you wouldn't. You'd decide what and how much you thought you needed to store, and then describe it as clearly as possible. Would you then stand over his shoulder and tell him how to cut the wood or where to put every screw? Not if you ever hoped to hire him again.
