Sam Chamberlain’s nature-inspired, multilayered work uses torn paper and paint to reveal subtle influences from a period of five years spent travelling in India as a child. Born in New York and now based in London, he is one of the few artists to acknowledge the importance of glue in the cut-and-paste process: ‘Gluing layers of paper onto one another and then cutting through them produces interesting, sometimes unpredictable effects, and gives an unclear view of depth, foreground and background.
