Brazilian-born, Rotterdam-based artist João Colagem can pinpoint exactly when the collage bug first hit – it was at school when he was five years old and he glued a cut-out image onto an empty mayonnaise jar. Collage is an important cultural tradition in Brazil: ‘We learn it in primary school and it stays glued in our lives. It happens this way because of basic necessity. There are no coloured pencils, paints or other materials to express yourself.
