Chapter 3. Cyber-Physical Systems Built on Wireless Sensor Networks

John A. Stankovic

In this chapter, wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies are discussed, with emphasis on several of the key themes found in cyber-physical systems (CPS) research. These themes include dependencies on the physical world, the multidisciplinary nature of CPS, open systems, systems of systems, and humans in the loop. To understand the motivation behind these technologies, several operational scenarios are given, relating each of them to the corresponding technologies they have produced. Examples include the basic results that exist in WSN for medium access control, routing, localization, clock synchronization, and power management. These topics are considered ...
