Chapter 3

Probability models

Abstract

This chapter begins by discussing basic probability, including language of probability as well as basic axioms. Basic combinatorics are discussed and we then move into the definition of random variables. Discrete and continuous random variables are covered as well as basic properties including expected values and variations. We cover applications of the random variables as well as a variety of common distributions and their properties. Examples utilizing cybersecurity data are emphasized.
