Learning the piece is only scratching the surface of your role as a designer. It is a critical step in the overall design process because it establishes a common language. Without this step you will have a hard time communicating with both the choreographer and the stage manager. The more significant task, however, is understanding the piece, particularly its structure and the work’s intent.
