I usually hate the idea of rules, but as long as they are considered and then used only as needed I can make my peace with them. It was Gus Solomons Jr. that introduced me to the idea that rules could be a creative tool. I wish I could claim credit for that insight but what I can do is to lay claim to my own set of rules that I think must be part of the thought process for, if not actually a part of, a good design. I don’t really know where these rules came from, and that is one of the wonderful mysteries of art: We do not generally know where our best ideas come from.
