Define whether
the study will be experimental or observational.
Whenever possible experimental studies are
preferred because we may be more confident in their conclusions.
In experimental studies an intervention, program, or treatment is
purposefully applied to the experimental units or subjects and the
effects are observed. For example an investigator may wish to study
the effectiveness of a new method for teaching reading. Reading teachers
may be randomly assigned to use the new method or the traditional
approach, and after a period of time their students are tested for
reading comprehension and improvement from baseline scores.
