Fixed income is different from equities, and corporate debt is different from government, agency, and mortgage debt. In the corporate debt markets, you are analyzing not just the debt and interest rate features impacting the bond or loan being analyzed, but also the credit quality of the issuer and the unique structure of the specific piece of debt being explored.

The first widely followed analytical tool may have been the Dow Jones Industrial Average that was started in 1896 by Charles Dow and included 12 stocks; it was run by hand at the end of each day for many years.
