Physical Design Philosophy
The object of the design process is to provide a physical structure that is flexible enough to provide rapid response to access activity and yet be reflective of the true business use that it is being designed for. In the early design stages, the DBMS selection is independent of the model. A model is translated to the physical model after a choice of DBMS has been made. It is here that the model is adjusted to the particulars of the environment it will run in. It is also here that choices will be made concerning technology platforms, as well as data placement decisions.
