Windows presentation foundation (WPF), formerly code-named Avalon, is the presentation (user interface) subsystem of the WinFx development platform for Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. WinFx is the successor to the Win32 development platform and is based on the .NET Framework. Also part of WinFx is the Windows Communication Foundation (formerly code-named Indigo). WinFx presentation capabilities are designed to revolutionize the development of rich user interfaces for both the desktop and the browser.
