An important part of any real-world application is obtaining and managing the data that drives the application. The application could be something as simple as a game that is retrieving and storing user preferences and scoring data. At the other end of the spectrum, it could be a complex business application that retrieves, manipulates, and updates data from multiple data sources over a network or the Web and within the scope of a distributed transaction using asynchronous message-based communications.
