Why do service levels? This is more than just an academic exercise, right?
The short answer is that our task is to avoid overspending while delivering services to meet/exceed business needs—so YES, service levels are more than just an academic exercise! Using service levels will improve what you spend and what you get in return.
The longer answer is that Tier 1 service levels cost significantly more than those for Tier 2 or Tier 3. Reducing the amount of data stored on Tier 1 will save the company money (back to that fiscal responsibility thing).
