Creating/deleting/consolidating virtual machine snapshots

Snapshot technology (many software backup solutions, such as VDP, rely on this technology) allows you to capture the state of a virtual machine at a specific point in time, which you can revert from at any time. Taken on a per-VM basis, each virtual machine can have multiple snapshots, and changes that have occurred can be kept by deleting the saved snapshots or discarded by reverting to a previous snapshot.

Snapshot utilization has some limitations:

  • Raw disks and RDM physical mode disks are not supported (virtual compatibility mode is supported instead)
  • Independent disks are supported only for powered-off VMs
  • VMs configured for bus sharing are not supported
