Whether it’s written in a book or stored in some vast data centre, data on its own is of no use. Like any asset, we need to do something with data to make it useful – and that ‘do something’ is to make a decision.
In fact, we can go a step further and say that the end value of data is the value of the decisions that are made using that data.
But before we can make a decision – at least one that is based on facts rather than intuition – we need to extract the data from our data stores so that we have the right information in the right format.
