This appendix highlights the governance of data challenges relating to regulations and regulatory compliance, and suggests a way forward using ontological mapping – that is the mapping of similar concepts from one legal structure to another – to highlight weaknesses relating to data collection and use in a compliance framework. The example provided relates to the transportation of hazardous substances in Canada. Data collected to meet the requirements of the Environmental Emergency Regulations is not aligned with the data collected to meet the requirements of the Transport of Dangerous Goods Act.
