You won’t encounter some mystical force of the universe that prevents you from building your data lake in your company’s on-premises data center under the direct and total control of your internal IT staff. However, cloud computing and data lakes go together like peanut butter and jelly, so you’ll almost certainly be thinking “The cloud! Of course!” as you pack up your data and head out on the highway toward the data lake.

Here’s some good news: You don’t need to be a cloud computing expert when it comes to your organization’s data lake. However, you should understand a few cloud computing basics to keep your efforts on the right path.
