Chapter 1

What’s it all about?

Abstract

This book is about machine learning techniques for data mining. We start by explaining what people mean by data mining and machine learning, and give some simple example machine learning problems, including both classification and numeric prediction tasks, to illustrate the kinds of input and output involved. To demonstrate the wide applicability of machine learning in practical applications, we continue with brief reviews of several fielded applications from a diverse set of areas. Machine learning is closely linked to the study of statistics, and we discuss the connections between these two fields next. It is also strongly related to the field of artificial intelligence, particularly search techniques, ...
