Traditional meters, such as the one shown in Figure 4.1, measure electricity, gas, or water use. The most sophisticated metering technology goes into electric meters. The metrology for gas and water meters is much simpler. Why? It’s a matter of power. Gas and water meters rely on battery power, and therefore are less complex in terms of the amounts of data they collect and transmit. Electric meters can draw the power they need to operate from the electrified wire they are connected to.
