Chapter 22. Decomposition Tree

The decomposition tree is an interactive visualization for hierarchical data. The concept is to take a single metric and drill it down into various dimensions. In Figure 22-1, you can see the sales drivers by country. The leader is the USA, and then we expand it by product categories and subcategories.

We can continue the analysis in a different direction: let’s expand Great Britain, and then the Clothing category, and see the ranking of products within it (Figure 22-2). In the same way, we can explore the data in different directions.

The decomposition tree is part of the standard set of Power BI visuals, so there is no need to download it from the gallery. It is built from a single measure and multiple categories that expand and “branch out” as you move from one to another.

How a Decomposition Tree Works

When building, in the Analyze field, you place the parameter you want to analyze and break down into subgroups. In the Explain by field, you place the categories by which you will analyze the original parameter—in our example, this is Country, Product category, Product subcategory, and Manager.
