MongoDB, Inc. was founded by Eliot Horowitz, Dwight Merriman, and Kevin Ryan to create a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) architecture using only open-source software components. PaaS is a cloud computing service that allows users to create applications on a computing platform without being required to provision or maintain the platform. They developed MongoDB to serve as the database system that could satisfy both the performance and flexibility needs of the platform.
