Elements of Performance
Performance is the way a computer system behaves given a particular work load. Performance is measured through one or more of the system's response time, throughput, and availability. It is affected by:
The resources available
How well the resources are utilized
Performance tuning should be undertaken when you want to improve the cost-benefit ratio of your system. Specific situations include:
Processing a larger, more demanding work load without increasing processing costs that may include having to acquire additional hardware
Obtaining faster system response time, or higher throughput, without increasing processing costs
Reducing processing costs without negatively affecting service to the client(s)
