Dynamic SQL provides flexibility and a means to construct universal interfaces with which to develop database applications. One of the drawbacks, however, is that query performance can suffer because of run-time access plan generation. Also, it often takes time to master an API such as JDBC as compared to directly embedding statements into your application. Although C/C++ programmers have always had a choice of writing their applications using static or dynamic embedded SQL, or using a dynamic SQL API such as ODBC, these options were not open to Java programmers.
