Chapter 21. Web Services

Web services represent a new approach for applications to communicate with one another. Using the open standards of UDDI, Web Service Definition Language (WSDL), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), and XML over an Internet protocol (e.g., HTTP), your applications can access Web service applications regardless of platform, language, or any other implementation details.

Specifically, a Web service is an application that can be invoked over the Internet (or an intranet) by another application. There are numerous publicly available Web services your applications can access, such as, a currency exchange rate service, a Major League Baseball statistics service, and online dictionaries.
