  1. About one third of home fires start in the kitchen. Unfortunately, few kitchens have fire extinguishers — and when they do, they tend to be stored out of sight due to their general unsightliness. While a hidden fire extinguisher may prevent aesthetic clashes with stainless-steel appliances and granite countertops, it is a poor choice in terms of emergency response. In panic situations, people get tunnel vision, and a fire extinguisher that is out of sight is a fire extinguisher that is likely to be out of mind.
