A Vision from Within
In meeting with middle managers in large organizations, the most frequent complaint I hear is, “I don't know what the vision is.” I often tell the people to take out and read their laminated plastic card—the small document that spells out their company's vision, mission, and values. They shake their heads and say, “No, that's not it.”
What is going on in this conversation? These people are telling me something very important, but what is it?
Today, much is said about the notion of vision. Though vision statements are now common in most large organizations, vision is not. Here we will consider the notion of vision and how it relates to the building of a high-performing organization.
