Beliefs Shape Deep Smarts
PHILOSOPHERS have defined knowledge as “justified true belief.” Why belief? Because knowledge is subjective, and it is shaped—justified—by many influences. Beliefs are important to deep smarts in at least two ways. First, beliefs build up just as deep smarts do—over time, by life experience, and through the influence of people around us. Beliefs are often largely tacit and unquestioned. Pushed to explain how they know something is true, people will often trace their knowledge back to some fundamental belief system.
